2D Articulatory velum modeling applied to copy synthesis of sentences containing nasal phonemes

چکیده
Articulatory synthesis could become a valuable tool to investigate links between articulatory gestures and acoustic cues. This papers presents the construction of an articulatory model of the velum which is intended to complete a model already comprising other articulators. The velum contour was delineated and extracted from a thousand of X-ray images corresponding to short sentences of French. A principal component analysis was applied in order to derive the main deformation modes. The weight of images corresponding to an open velopharyngeal port was increased in the analysis so as to obtain linear components rendering the velum deformation modes. The first corresponds to the opening and comes with a shape modification linked to the apparition of a bulb in the upper part of the velum when it rises. The area function of the oral tract is modified so as to incorporate the velum movements. This model is connected with acoustic simulations in order to synthesize sentences containing nasal French vowels and consonants.

European portuguese nasal vowels: an EMMA study
In this paper new EMMA data regarding European Portuguese nasals is presented. Some details about corpus constitution, recording and annotation is given. First results from analysis are presented. Quantitative analysis of velum movement was done for nasal vowels between stops. For the other contexts representative examples are presented and qualitatively analysed. In all contexts nasal vowels a...
متن کاملVelum Control for Oral Sounds
Velum position during speech shows systematic variability within and across speakers, but has a binary phonological contrast (nasal and oral). Velum lowering is often thought to constitute an independent phonological unit, partly because of its robust prosodically-conditioned timing during nasal stops. Velum raising, on the other hand, is usually considered to be a non-phonological consequence ...
متن کاملRecovering gestures from speech signals: a preliminary study for nasal vowels
For nasal vowels, a gesture as simple as the lowering of the velum produces complex acoustic spectra. However, we still find a relative simplicity in the perceptual space; nasality is perceived easily. In this preliminary study, we use statistic method to recover the gesture of the velum. In order to reduce the extreme variability of nasal vowels, we introduced a simulation based on Maeda’s mod...
متن کاملA three-dimensional articulatory model of the velum and nasopharyngeal wall based on MRI and CT data.
An original three-dimensional (3D) linear articulatory model of the velum and nasopharyngeal wall has been developed from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography images of a French subject sustaining a set of 46 articulations, covering his articulatory repertoire. The velum and nasopharyngeal wall are represented by generic surface triangular meshes fitted to the 3D contours ex...
متن کاملTowards a 3D articulatory model of velum based on MRI and CT images
This paper describes the processing of MRI and CT images needed for developing a 3D linear articulatory model of velum. The 3D surface that defines each organ constitutive of the vocal and nasal tracts is extracted from MRI and CT images recorded on a subject uttering a corpus of artificially sustained French vowels and consonants. First, the 2D contours of the organs have been manually extract...
